A simple weekly household routine that sticks
A good routine is not about doing more. It is about making the same jobs easy, shared and predictable, so they stop taking up headspace.
Start with what actually needs doing
- Daily basics: meals, tidy-up, school bags, a quick look at tomorrow.
- Weekly jobs: laundry, bins, shopping, a clean of the bathroom and kitchen, changing beds.
- Monthly and yearly: bills, renewals, appointments, seasonal jobs.
Share it fairly
- List every job, including the invisible ones such as remembering dates, booking appointments and ordering things.
- Talk it through and agree who takes what. Swap over from time to time so no one is stuck with the same jobs.
- Involve children with age-appropriate jobs. Small, regular tasks build confidence.
A 15-minute weekly reset
- Look at the week ahead: appointments, clubs, birthdays, anything due.
- Check the shopping list and plan a few meals.
- Tick off what is done and move anything that slipped.
Pick a regular time, such as Sunday evening, and keep it short and friendly.
Keep it flexible
Some weeks will go off track, and that is fine. A routine is a starting point, not a test. If something never gets done, change the plan rather than blaming anyone.

About these guides. They are general information for people in the UK, not financial, legal or regulated advice. Prices, rules and providers change, so check official sources and the provider's own terms before you decide. Some links to other companies may in future earn KWE a commission if you choose to use them. That never changes what we write, and we only link to services we think are useful. KWE also makes the InYourHands app, which helps you keep track of dates like these.
